Percy Decries Arrack Ban
I often travel to Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India, for business. Among other business interests I have there, Bangalore is headquarters of the software team that allows me to deliver this superior blogging product to you on an almost daily basis. You'll notice that they made a few tweaks recently to increase this blog's functionality and durability. Enjoy!
Because of my substantial holdings in Bangalore and the rest of the State of Karnataka, I wanted to express my disapproval of the banning of the sale of the distilled spirit arrack. India has a poverty of high quality distilled spirits and a punitive tariff policy that makes consumption of high quality distilled spirits impossible for most Indians. I hope the state government reconsiders the ban, which is currently due to take effect on July 1, 2007.
Good news, though! The company chaired by Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya is set to acquire Glasgow-based Scotch giant Whyte & Mackay, whose Scotch whiskys include The Dalmore Single Highland Malt Whisky Collection. You may recall that I purchased The Dalmore 62 years old for over £25,000 a few years ago. Let's hope that, with an Indian company owning a Scotch whisky maker, the Indian government rethinks its tariffs on imported distilled spirits, or Scotch anyway.
Update: $1.18 billion deal confirmed.
