Percy on the Issues: The War on Drugs
I'm running for Congress in 2008 and tackling the issues of the day right here on my blog. Today's topic: The War on Drugs.
My drug policy is quite simple and straightforward: No restrictions whatsoever on the sale or use of drugs. Our tort system can sort out liability and damages for someone who has experienced a "bad trip." Workplace testing for drugs that don't increase productivity as well as increased sentences for crimes committed while hopped up on drugs will provide all the extra incentive we need to keep people from becoming too drug-happy. The money drug users would save by not having to pay black market prices could be used to pay for quality drug treatment programs that might otherwise be out of reach financially.
My Total Legalization Program would (1) save trillions of dollars in enforcement and incarceration costs, (2) allow our pharmaceutical industry to develop chemical-based drugs that will destroy the market for the crop-based drugs that are used to finance terrorism, (3) increase tax revenues, (4) increase the use of performance-enhancing drugs and, thus, worker productivity and (5) make for an overall better quality of life for those who now can only legally or economically rely on alcohol or prescription drugs for stress management or pleasure.

Actually, I agree with this to some extent:
"No restrictions whatsoever on the sale or use of drugs."
When you get it passed, give me a ring and let's see how good it can get.
